I was introduced to Myofascial Release at time in my life when I was considering leaving the profession of massage therapy all together. My body was in pain from old injuries and trauma. The techniques and stretches I was given were only temporary, including care such as chiropractic, massage therapy and even physical therapy.
Old neck injuries (too many to list) including numbness in my right hand due the “stenosis” in my spine, and low back injuries from weight lifting many years ago, was keeping me from doing things I enjoyed. I decided to take responsibility of my own health. By using the techniques I have been teaching my clients, I drastically decreased the pain I was having due to the injuries. And, the numbness in my hand completely went away ONLY from doing self – treatment techniques. It is possible that you too can completely heal yourself with guidance of self – care. Our techniques take the pressure off the myofascial system, which help all your systems of your body work more efficiently.
In December of 2010 at a Christmas party, I found myself on the ground. A friend was holding me down (so I wouldn’t hurt myself). Apparently, I had passed out and my body was going into some type of full body violent spasms. The medical field thought I was crazy, (which was beside the point). These “episodes” happened on and off for several years or more. The Doctors just prescribed medication of which did absolutely nothing. Finally, after going back and forth to the Doctor, including several ER visits in between, they labeled me with Dysautonomia; a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system. They were of no help in trying to heal this condition. Had it not been for my partner, Patricia who first introduced me to the Barnes Approach to Myofascial Release, I would probably be very medicated and still not well. This approach led down quite a journey of ups and down in order to heal. Over time, the Myofascial Release Approach, coupled with home care therapy has helped me let go of old patterns, dysfunctions and feelings that no longer serve me. I can wholeheartedly say that if it were not for this work I would still be controlled by a diagnosis. I now have the awareness and tools to know that I am not my diagnosis, and that healing is possible. Please note, that Myofascial Release not only helps with muscular and joint pain but, can also help with neurological issues and other “systems” of your body by taking the pressure off of the myofascial system.
My personal experience with breast cancer – I had a bi-lateral (double) mastectomy that left me in extreme pain and very limited movement. Although, I had a great team of doctors, after surgery for the longest time, every day I woke up, I felt like I had a tight band wrapped around my chest. I literally felt like I was wearing a straightjacket. Unfortunately, Doctors have no idea how to help or even what someone like myself is going through. It wasn’t until about 10 years later that I discovered The John F. Barnes, Myofascial Release Approach that I was able to get rid of the chest pain and straightjacket.
(Self) Myofascial Release (“MFR”) is a leading-edge type of holistic therapy which is profoundly effective in dissolving pain, improving mobility and eliminating chest tightness following breast cancer surgery. MFR benefits women who struggle with pain and limited movement that may have been caused by scar tissue. Mastectomy and reconstructive surgery (including augmentation) can create problems such as those listed above. These problems can be eliminated with (Self) Myofascial Release.
Myofascial Release combined with self – care techniques removed the straightjacket feeling that I was having caused by restricted fascia. This helped relieve pain and increased my flexibility associated with my post – surgical procedure. MFR differs from traditional therapy by using gentle, maintained pressure with a stretch into the area creating a melting or “piezoelectric” effect that releases the tissue. This will take pressure off the pain sensitive structures, restoring correct alignment and improving mobility.
